Jacob 2-2 is a Brooklyn-based electronic artist whose work combines hip-hop beats, lush synth textures, and a healthy dose of warped childhood nostalgia. His latest release on Moodgadget , Fantasiarexia , is equally influenced by the crystalline new-age tones of 80s film soundtracks as it is by bass-heavy funk and jazz-fusion. Warm analog synths, broken 8-bits and Fairlight fragments are densely layered on top of 808 grooves and chopped up beats. His recent work already attracted the attention of artists such as Com Truise, who described it as “Perfect sound design with hints of vintage computing… visions of a video age slowly melting in the sky.”
On the heel of Julien Mier’s widely acclaimed When Will You Wake Up, King Deluxe are holding a remix competition for the final spot on his upcoming 12″.
The winning track will be exquisitely mastered and pressed alongside a Julien original as well as two stellar mystery remixers!
Tomlaan, a young producer from the Netherlands, offers a hefty 37 minutes of original material for the latest Kort mix. Borrowing heavily from the introverted soundscapes of early Warp records, Tomlaan weaves decrepit melodies through bristling, neck-snapping beats, each track an exercise in minimalism that lets swung rhythms and lush chords get just the right amount of breathing room. The mixtape flows elegantly, beginning with ambient Boards of Canadian stylings and masterfully swelling into all-out industrial brain-mushers with smooth melodies tying the whole piece together.
There’s something to be said for producers who can tell a story using the only original material in a mix - and we won’t steal tomlaan’s thunder by giving that away. Perfect for a Friday night in, or that last subway home…do not sleep. These dude has sounds to spare.
